I'm creating a template in Word 2013. I have two Rich Text Content Control elements for a 'docname' and a 'docnumber' These are on the (different) first page. I have assigned each of these elements with an appropriate Bookmark name (as above). In the main document section, within the Header I have placed a Cross Reference for each of these. Did it even happen to you that, when you write a paper, then you decide to insert/deleate a figure, or even move your figures around, you will need to search.
In Academia there are often very lengthy documents that have myriad footnotes and they sometimes necessitate cross-referencing. This often occurs in technological business manuals as well. The issue here is that when you use automatic footnote numbering the cross-references can be a burden if you have to update them manually. Fortunately, allows you to automatically cross-reference footnotes so that your cross-references once set, always stay in place correctly. Follow the steps below to learn how:.
Select the footnote reference mark that you would like to cross-reference in your document. Assign this footnote reference mark a bookmark name by clicking on the Insert of your Ribbon and in the Links group, click on Bookmark. Place your cursor in the footnotes where you want to place the cross-reference. Click CTRL + F9 to insert field brackets.
Be certain your cursor stays between the brackets. in ftnref followed by the name of the bookmark used above. Click F9 to update the field information.
Word will replace the field with the footnote number to which your bookmark was assigned.
When you refer to a particular figure in your document, rather than typing in “Figure 2”, you can use a cross-reference, so if the figure number changes, the in-text reference will also change. This will also work to reference page numbers of headings and so on. Put your cursor where you want the reference to be. On the References Ribbon, in the Captions Group, click the Cross-reference icon. Select the type of item you are referencing from the Reference type pulldown.
For figures, select Only Label and Number from the Insert reference to: pulldown, unless you want the entire caption to appear in the text. Select the item you want to reference from the For which caption: section. Click Insert and close the Cross-reference dialog box. When your caption number changes, you can update the in-text references by right-clicking the in-text reference and selecting Update field.
